The street was deserted, loose newspapers fluttered in the wind. Battered cars littered the street, their owners long gone, either dead or wandering the streets as one of the infected.

The silence was disturbed by moans, the call of the zombies. Three of them staggered from around a corner. Two men and a young woman; the first male zombie was quite tall and lanky, long black hair draped over his face matted in blood. He was wearing a biker outfit that was torn in several places, and his right ankle was clearing broken as his foot pointed the other way.

The second male zombie was shorter and quite fat; his gut bulged out of the trousers it wore. His upper half was naked and revealed the bites and nail marks that covered it.

The female zombie was the most normal looking of the group. Wearing a pair of jeans and a red t-shirt, short blonde hair styled in a bob. The only sign that she’d been infected was a small mark on her left wrist.

The Chubby zombie paused for a moment sniffing the air. It let out a hungry moan which quickly vanished beneath a louder sound…a gun shot!

The bullet smashed into his forehead snapping it backwards. The chubby man collapsed in a heap. The shooter smiled from his spot on the roof, chambering a second round he glanced back to the other person besides him.

“Beat that!”

The second person lifted another rifle and took aim. She pulled the trigger twice in succession; the tall zombie was dropped to his knees as a bullet thudded into his knee cap, seconds later his head snapped back as the second round struck him right in his left eye.

“How’s that?” asked Ada with a smile,

“Not bad,” replied James,

“Okay who gets the last one?”

James didn’t reply but took aim again, Ada sighed and did likewise. The girl zombie just stood there looking down at the two downed zombies. Well she was until a bullet caught her in her shoulder, spinning her around with the force. A second bullet managed to catch her in mid spin piercing her right ear. She dropped as if pole-axed.

James looked at Ada, she sure was something. Not only was she pretty but boy could she shoot. He got back to his feet and went over to her. Ada passed him the rifle she was using and he took it off and put it back in the gun’s case, he did the same with his own gun. Together they headed back down to the gun shop.

“Hey James, how are we doing for supplies?”

“Well, I stocked up on supplies early on, but as you’re staying here it won’t hurt to go out and fetch some extra stuff just in case, female essentials isn’t something I thought of stocking up on.”

Ada laughed then smiled as James passed her own handgun back. She checked it carefully, noting it had been cleaned and it had been modified slightly.

“I worked on the firing mechanism. You should hardly feel the recoil now.”

James explained as he readied his own pistol. He holstered it then handed Ada a small compact sub-machine gun, before picking up a shotgun for himself.

“Okay Ada, we don’t need to go far, we can cut through the neighbouring building and there is a convenience store right there.”

“Roger, okay let’s do this.”

The two survivors nodded and headed to the shutters. James told Ada to stay quiet and disappeared upstairs for a few minutes. He returned saying the way was clear. With a grunt James lifted the shutters up and they left the gun shop before bringing the shutters back down.

As quietly as possible, James and Ada walked towards the office block that stood next door. According to what James was saying. They were to enter the building by a side door and use the utility corridors to move easily through the building. A journey he had made countless times.

They managed to get to the side door and James unlocked the padlock he’d put on it previously. Carefully weapons at the ready they crossed the threshold into the building.

“Clear…as usual.”

James said happily, he’d used this route a load of times since the infection began and it’d always been safe. It seemed like zombies didn’t understand the concept of doorknobs.

That weakness of zombies was why the utility corridors were safe; they were simply door after door. In fact there were a total of five doors in this utility corridor alone.

James reached out and opened the next door again revealing another empty room. If she was honest, Ada was disappointed she wanted some action. They walked through the room, James paused as he heard a sound…the floor creaking.

“Oh shit, Ada run!”

James shouted out even as the floorboards beneath him gave way, sending him tumbling below.

“James NO!” Ada screamed.

He had vanished, she couldn’t see him anymore. She called out but he didn’t reply. It was silent but that was shattered by someone cursing.

“James?”

“Yeah it’s me.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah I’ve just got a sore arse!”

“Are there any zombies down there?”

“Not that I can see, but I doubt I will be able to get back up to you. I heard the early news reports the basement of this office block was cordoned off due to infection.  Here I’m going to toss up my keys, just get back to the shop; I’ll meet you there as soon as I can.”

“Okay, here take the machine gun!” Ada called throwing it down the hole,

“Thanks, I’ll be back…damn it some Zs are coming get going leave me.”

Ada went to argue but she was cut off by the shotgun’s roar and she heard James curse. She knew he was right, suddenly she saw something sparkle in the air she snatched it recognising the keys for the shop. You better get back in one peace she thought trying to send it to James. Turning around she headed back to the shop. Ada left the office block and cursed her luck, the street in front of the shop had been empty earlier but now there were at least ten zombies. She snatched her handgun from her belt and took aim at the nearest zombie.

Shit, I don’t need this…Ada fired her gun the bullet penetrating the zombie’s skull. It collapsed. She kept firing as neatly as she could. Eventually her gun was empty and just two zombies were left. She ejected the clip just as the zombies reached her…

Ada’s reaction was instantaneous, she side stepped the first zombies lunge using her left hand to guide it past her. Her right hand lashed out using the hilt of the gun as a club, it connected with the back of the zombies head with a wet thud. The zombie fell, the other zombie let out a groan of protest but Ada swung her right hand in an arc. The hilt of the gun went smashing into its face. The zombie went down like it had been backslapped. Quickly Ada lifted up the shutters and dashed inside the building bringing them down as quickly as she could.

For now she was safe…but her thoughts were of James…
